Staff Development

MLT develops its workers through planned trainings, mentoring, acquired work experience and giving opportunity. Each year every MLT worker goes through at least one training relevant to one’s area of service in Bible Translation or relevant to Bible Translation in general. Annual increments in Support will be made only for those who fulfill this condition.  

Training Programs: MLT Field and Management personnel go through the following trainings before or during their service with the organization

  1. Christian Missionary Training: Theology/Biblical Studies/Biblical Languages/Cross-cultural Studies
  2. Linguistics: Orthography/Phonology or Grammar or Applied Linguistics
  3. Translation: Principles, Workshops &Software
  4. Scripture Use: Principles, Literature, Technology& Workshops
  5. Management & Finance Training

Internships/Consultant Training

MLT operates a 3-4 year Training/Internship Program. The aim of this is to Produce Consultants to serve BT projects and needs within and outside MLT. So the goal is both to meet needs and to develop the individual. Trainees or CiTs will be Supervised by MLT personnel as well as by others designated by other parties involved in Consultant Development. Internship activities will be expected to take 20% or less of work time per quarter. This is to ensure that Internships are done on-the-job without significantly affecting specific Project goals.

Requirements for becoming a Bible Translation Consultant with MLT include, a minimum of

  1. Has mastery of the whole Bible in a demonstrable way
  2. the equivalent of 2semesters of University level studies in Linguistics, Biblical Studies, Exegesis/Hermeneutics, Biblical Languages (Greek & Hebrew), Theology and Cross-cultural Studies.
  3. Guided Bible Back-ground Studies through Guided tour of Bible Lands or Guided Study of “Bible Land As Classroom” DVD either of which is followed by an Examination.
  4. Translation experience in the 4 stages of Translation: Community Mobilization, Drafting, Internal Review, External Review & Publishing.
  5. Consulting Experience: Six 2-week Consulting Sessions which must include at least 4 main genres (Narrative, Poetry, Prophesy, Wisdom, Law, 80 chapters, Old and New Testament portions, 2 different Consultant, 2 different Language groups, 2 different language regions, 2 Consultant Checks by Intern, 2 different states/countries, 2 Teaching Sessions involving Powerpoint presentations.
  6. Computer Skills including Typing above 30 words/minute, Computer Appreciation, Word Processing, Powerpoint, Paratext and internet use.
  7. Experience in Bible Translation Media Production Audio and video recording e.g the Jesus Film.
  8. Attested Interpersonal and Conflict Resolving Skill

Interns will work with specific Projects as Project Advisers (Facilitators, Missionary Translators), grow into Associate-Consultants and then Consultants.

An Intern becomes an Associate Consultant after completing Biblical Studies &Biblical Languages, Completing the Bible-Background Requirement and 3 years attachment with a project and 3 checking sessions involving a total of at least 2 consultants, 2 Projects, and3 Genres from either NT or OT.

Type 2 Consultant Development Track

MLT also operates a parallel Consulting Strategy in which Associate Consultants are recruited from among Christians with

  1. 15-20 years experience as Sunday School Teachers

    Or

    Certificate/Diploma/Degree in CRS/Christian Theology

  2. 10-15years experience as Secondary School Teachers

    OR

    A Degree in any Language and rank of Head teachers in Primary Schools

  3. Bible Background experience from Guided& tested Tour of Bible Lands or Guided and Tested Study of Bible Lands DVD
  4. Introductory Course in Translation Principles
  5. Ability to interact with Biblical Languages through Computer or Printed Helps.
  6. Written Commitment to participate in MLT quarterly trainings while on-the-job—fully for 2 years and in selected trainings thereafter.

CiTs preparing to serve in Literacy and Language Software & Typesetting will also operate a 4 year Internship with details worked out between MLT and the Partnering bodies.

MLT develops Review Consultantsin its Internship Program. Requirements are

  1. Has reviewed a language Project or at least complete NT
  2. Has translation Training (ICTP)
  3. Is able to use computers and able to teach/Train with Powerpoint
  4. Has cross-cultural work experience in any field
  5. Shows ability to use both literal and free translations.
  6. Has interdenominational Experience.
  7. Is above 50years
  8. Is participating in MLT quarterly trainings.

Consultancy is ultimately confirmed by the regulating body for BT in Nigeria, Forum for Bible Translation Executives and Consultants, FOBTEC, at MLT’s request.
